A 28-year long wait is finally over

BY Prasun Choudhury

Hosts: India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh

Format: The ICC having learnt its lesson from the 2007 World Cup, where in the four-group format India & Pakistan were eliminated in the group stages on the back of upsets by Bangladesh & Ireland respectively causing both a considerable lack of interest as well as revenue, went back to the 1996 Format where 14 teams were divided in to two groups, with the top 4 from each group qualifying for the Quarter Finals.

Group Stages: The Grind Begins

Group A

The matches in Group A followed a predictable pattern with the top teamsdominating the lower ranked teams. However, Pakistan managed to inflict upon Australia their 1st loss since the group stages of the 1999 World Cup ending a run of 34 matches without defeat. The innings of the Group Stage from Group A belonged to Ross Taylor who launched a blistering attack on Pakistan in the final 5 overs, scoring 131* off 124 deliveries.

Qualified: Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand

Group B

Group B was much more interesting & closely fought mainly due to the exploits of England who were great against the top teams - Holding India to a tie, beating SA in a low scoring thriller & fending off the Windies in a tight contest. They were equally abysmal against the lower ranked teams having huffed & puffed to victory over Netherlands, losing to Ireland after putting on a mammoth score & again losing to Bangladesh in a cliff hanger. The innings of the group stage or even the entire tournament came from Kevin O Brien who notched up the fastest century in World Cup History off 50 deliveries helping Ireland romp home to victory from an unlikely position of 113/5 in their pursuit of 328.

Qualified: SA, India, England, West indies.

Quarter Finals: Tough Fight Ahead

Pakistan VS West Indies

The 1st Quarter Final was as one sided as it could get as the Pakistan Spin Trio of Ajmal, Afridi& Hafeez choked the West indies batsman in to submission. WI could barely manage 112 on the board which the Pakistani openers knocked off with considerable ease.

India VS Australia

The most anticipated match of the Quarters pitted Hosts India against their old nemesis Australia who had struggled in the tournament till date with their Batsman struggling for runs & the lack of a quality spinner.

Australia won the toss & decided to bat 1st. Watson went early but Ponting & Haddin resurrected the innings with a brisk 2nd wicket partnership of 70 but Yuvraj Singh dealt body blows to their innings when he got both Haddin& Clarke in quick succession. The pitch was slow & the runs came at a trickle with only Ponting holding one end up amidst a flurry of wickets at the other end with Khan accounting for the ever-dependableHussey & Cameron White. Ponting though amidst huge pressure notched up a brilliant century & David Hussey chipped in with a cameo in the end to haul Australia to 260. On a slow pitch the target looked daunting given Australia's penchant for Knock Outs.

The Indians were off to a brisk start with Tendulkar looking in imperious touch & even the loss of Sehwag didn't seem to deter India's progress. But soon Tendulkar was caught behind off Tait for 53 leaving the game in the balance. Gambhir & Kohli stitched a small partnership which ended with Kohli hitting a full toss to short midwicket & then Gambhir committedhara-kiri by running himself out with India still needing 93 to win. When Dhoni went caught at Point to Lee, India still needed 74 to win with only the last recognised pair of Yuvraj & the recalled Raina at the crease. The pair though batted with aplomb with Yuvraj carting Lee & Tait thru square & thru the covers while Raina joined the party by depositing Lee over Long on & pulling Johnson to the mid-wicket boundary. In the 48th Over when Yuvraj belted Lee thru the covers, the Crowd had lost it. Yuvraj was on the turf, mid-pitch, arms aloft, looking up at the sky and then waving his bat away in a frenzy of emotions. The 3 times Reigning World Champions were out & we would have a new champion this time out.

New Zealand VS South Africa

On a slow Mirpur track, New Zealand crawled their way to 221 on the back of a 83 from Jesse Ryder & some valuable contributions from Taylor & Williamson. The total looked well below par specially against the formidable batting line up of the Proteas. SA were cruising along in the chase at 108/2 when suddenly SA did what they do best - "Choked". Once they realised their opponents were cracking under pressure, New Zealand went for the kill with close-in fielders and disciplined bowling, led by Jacob Oram who took four wickets and a great catch. The choking was plain to see & painful to watch & it was epitomised by the dismissal of AB Devilliers. Faf du Plessis hit straight to midwicket and ran like a headless chicken. AB de Villiers should perhaps have refused that call but he responded, only to find himself well short of the crease. SA were all out for 172 handing New Zealand a place in the semi-finals.

England VS Sri Lanka

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga set an emphatic seal on Sri Lanka's place in their home semi-final against New Zealand, as England's chaotic World Cup campaign came to an abrupt and anticlimactic end under the floodlights at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Set a testing total of 230 at a venue where successful run-chases have been notoriously thin on the ground, Sri Lanka's openers set about proving that history is bunk as they sauntered to victory by 10 wickets and with a massive 63 balls to spare.

Semi Finals: One Step Closer

New Zealand VS Sri Lanka

New Zealand after winning the toss chose to bat 1st & proceeded to build a fighting total riding on small contributions from their top order with Styris being the bedrock of the innings with a cautious 57 off 77. But it all unravelled at the end when they lost 5 wickets for 13 runs in an attempt to up the ante in the final overs to fold for 217. A total of 240 would have been handy but Nz were left to rue the collapse in the death overs. The variety in the Sri Lankan Bowling line up ensured Nz were never let off the hook.

The chase began with gusto with Tharanga racing along to 30 off 31 balls before falling to Southee. Sri Lanka progressed serenely with Dilshan & Sangakkara notching up a 100 partnership & the match seemed a formality with SL at 160/1. Then suddenly Dilshan, Jayawardene & Sangakkara perished within a span of 8 runs & Sri Lanka pressed the panic button. Runs came at a trickle in the next 5 overs & Silva in a quest to break the shackles chopped on to his stumps. The experience of Thilan Samaraweera & the matured Angelo Mathews calmed Sri Lankan nerves by a couple of blows & some uncharacteristic fielding lapses from New Zealand ensured that Sri Lanka were through to their 2nd consecutive World Cup finals.

India VS Pakistan

India moved one step closer to their dream of a 2nd World Cup triumph after their bowlers suffocated Pakistan's batsmen to set up a 29-run victory in the semi-final in Mohali. Opting to bat 1st, India was quick off the blocks with Sehwag at his brutal best carting Gul for 21 in an over. Even though he fell for a breezy 35 off 21, the Indian innings had already taken off & even though SRT was not at his fluent best he kept the score ticking. Pakistan would have to thank Wahab Riaz for keeping them in the contest with the scalp of Sehwag in his 1st spell & then returning with the wickets of Kohli & Yuvraj off successive deliveries. The runs dried up on the slow pitch & India crawled along at snail’s pace assisted by some generous Pakistan fielding dropping Tendulkar four times on 27, 45, 70 & 81 Tendulkar also survived a plumb Lbw which was given by the Umpire Gould but inexplicably DRS had it missing leg stump much to the disbelief of the Pakistan players & also the millions watching on TV. Dhoni scratched around for a less than impressive 25 before being trapped Infront by Wahab. It was Raina who took India to a fighting total by virtue of a counter attacking innings of 36 & made sure that India had a solid total of 260 to defend against a Pakistan batting line up not known for their chasing ability.

Pakistan started well through Akmal & Hafeez who looked in pristine touch with his drives & flicks. But a string of 8 dots from Munaf Patel led to a brain fade for Hafeez who premeditated a sweep of Munaf& edged behind to Dhoni. Younis Khan & Misbah sucked out all the momentum out of Pakistan's innings by playing dot balls after dot balls as Pakistan searched desperately for some intent. That intent although short-lived arrived in the form of Umar Akmal. Akmal struck a pair of sixes off Yuvraj, lofting him straight over the sight screen and pulling him over midwicket, and anything was possible while he was at the crease. But Dhoni called on Harbhajan to replace Yuvraj, and with the first ball of his spell he came around the wicket and pushed one across Akmal, taking the off stump when the batsman played for the spin.

Shahid Afridi also fell to Harbhajan when he skied a catch off a full toss, and the obdurate Misbah-ul-Haq was left to steer the chase. He found it difficult to lift his tempo and was the last man out, caught on the boundary for 56 in the final over, but he ate up 76 deliveries and had he shown some more intent earlier, Pakistan might have had a chance.

India was through to their 3rd World Cup Final & For now, they could dream of their first World Cup in 28 years.

GRAND FINALE: THE END GAME

India VS Sri Lanka

28 years after Kapil Dev & his Team lifted the World Cup: An event which changed the history & dynamics of World Cricket, India recaptured the crown in their own backyard to scenes of Delirium previously unforeseen in the sub-continent.

The final began amid scenes of confusion, with the toss having to be re-taken after the match referee, Jeff Crowe, said he hadn't heard Kumar Sangakkara's call the first time around. Replays of the first toss suggested Sangakkara had called heads, correctly, but Dhoni seemed to have misheard it and thought he had won the toss, turning to the commentator Ravi Shastri and saying, "We'll bat." In the end, Sangakkara called heads again, won the toss, and chose to bat.

Sri Lanka though were quickly in trouble against a mesmeric first spell from Zaheer Khan. The first ten overs yielded Sri Lanka an underwhelming 31 runs. Mahela Jayawardene turned the tide, using the pace and bounce of the pitch to find the third-man boundary repeatedly, with exquisite late cuts and glides. His unbeaten 103, and some spectacular hitting at the death from Nuwan Kulasekara and Thisara Perera, lifted Sri Lanka to 274.

India needed to pull off the highest ever chase in a World Cup final to lift the World Cup & their hopes were dealt a crushing blow when Malinga slid one on to the back pad of Sehwag off the 2nd delivery of the innings. Tendulkar had the crowd on their feet with a sumptuously accumulated 17 off 12 deliveries & it seemed as though the script was written for him but when Malinga had him drawn in to a loose drive from a gentle outswinger, the decibel levels at the Wankhede had plummeted. Kohli replaced Sachin at the crease & instantly showed all the mettle for the big occasion as he eased along to 35 from 49 balls before falling to an outstanding return catch by Tillakaratne Dilshan, who dived full-length across the crease to intercept a leading edge. Then came the captain's masterstroke. MS Dhoni chose to promote himself ahead of the in-form Yuvraj Singh, with India needing 160 from 28 overs. Dhoni did so to avoid two left Handers at the crease against Murali & Randiv & also having played with Murali through the years at CSK, he felt he read the Doosra better than anyone in the team. Never the less it was a decision fraught with risk.

Dhoni started cautiously but soon pummelled the extra cover boundary hitting 6 boundaries in that region with drives & punches off Muralitharan & the erratic Randiv. Gambhir hit 9 fours in his 97 & it was his sheer grit & indomitable spirit that shone through. Their 109-run stand was the highest by an Indian pairing in three World Cup final appearances, and even when Gambhir gave away the chance for an unforgettable century with a tired charge and slash at Perera, the result was no longer in doubt. Yuvraj Singh joined Dhoni and the pair snatched all hope for the visitors with a flurry of boundaries. Dhoni's winning six over long-on, followed by a stylish bat twirl that rested under his arm pit, became the tournament's snapshot as India won the World Cup after 28 years.

Yuvraj Singh was the best performer in the 2011 World Cup by the proverbial mile. With a tally of 362 runs, 15 wickets - most of which were of top-order batsmen - and three catches, he secured the Man of the Tournament & deservedly so.
